About Agave 'Shaka Zulu'

Origin

Born in the sunny nurseries of California, this stunning hybrid crosses Agave attenuata and Agave ocahui. It brings a striking architectural sculpture with glowing red leaf margins straight to your rock garden or sunny patio!

Air Purifying

Like many desert succulents, it carries out Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) to absorb carbon dioxide and release fresh oxygen during the night. It serves as a sharp, stylish natural air purifier that works while you sleep.

Toxicity

Keep curious pets and little hands at a safe distance from its sharp terminal spines and sap! The sap contains calcium oxalate crystals and saponins that can cause painful skin irritation or severe mouth discomfort if chewed.

Caring for Agave 'Shaka Zulu'

Watering

Practice the soak-and-dry method by drenching the soil thoroughly and letting it dry out completely before offering another drink. It stores ample water within its thick leaves, making it exceptionally drought-tolerant once established.

Light and Placement

Position it where it can bask in direct sunlight or very bright, indirect light for at least six hours daily. Strong sunshine illuminates its red and yellow leaf edges, creating its signature "glowing" backlit silhouette.

Nutrition

Feed lightly once or twice during the active spring and summer growing season using a diluted cactus and succulent fertilizer. Skip feeding entirely in the fall and winter when the plant settles into its natural resting period.

Repotting

Upgrade to a slightly larger, heavy terra cotta pot every two to three years in early spring when the roots fill the container. Always use a gritty, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix to keep its root system happy and dry.

Pruning and Flowering

Trim off dead or damaged lower leaves near the stem base using heavy-duty pruners and protective gloves. As a monocarpic hybrid, it produces a massive flowering spike after many years of growth before gracefully ending its life cycle.

Agave 'Shaka Zulu' SOS

Illness

Excess moisture and standing water in the leaf crown quickly trigger root rot and fungal stem rot. Watch out for agave snout weevils and scale insects, ensuring sharp drainage and good airflow to keep pests at bay.
