Albuca Spiralis

Native to the arid, rocky regions of the Karoo in South Africa, Albuca spiralis (commonly known as 'Frizzle Sizzle') is a bulbous succulent adapted to a winter-growing, summer-dormant lifecycle. Evolutionary pressures in its dry, sun-baked habitat shaped its distinctive foliage: the narrow, glandular leaves curl into tight, corkscrew-like springs to minimize surface area, deflect harsh solar radiation, and capture atmospheric moisture. As warm weather arrives in late spring, it pushes up stalks of yellow-green, vanilla-scented blooms before losing its foliage to rest underground through the dry summer months.

  • Toxic to pets and children
  • Repot once every 2 years
  • Fertilize once a month
  • Very little water

About Albuca Spiralis

Origin

Hails straight from the semi-arid, winter-rainfall regions of South Africa! Adapted to the dry climate, it naturally sleeps underground through hot months and wakes up when conditions shift.

Air Purifying

Absolutely! This quirky, corkscrew diva works quietly in the background during its active growth periods, helping refresh indoor oxygen levels and keep your space feeling lively.

Toxicity

Keep curious paws away! The bulb contains oxalates and saponins that cause severe stomach upset, making it toxic to cats, dogs, and curious humans if chewed or ingested.

Caring for Albuca Spiralis

Watering

Water thoroughly when active and growing once the top 50–75% of the soil has dried out. Cut off watering almost completely when it drops its leaves for dormancy, as wet soil will quickly rot the sleeping bulb!

Light and Placement

Full, direct sunlight is its absolute happy zone! Set it right on your sunniest south-facing windowsill—intense light is the secret ingredient that keeps those leaves tightly coiled instead of growing flat and straight.

Nutrition

Give it a light snack once a month during active growth using a low-nitrogen succulent fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Never feed it while it is dormant and resting!

Repotting

Level up its home every 2–3 years just as it wakes up from dormancy! Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus or succulent soil mix with extra perlite or pumice, and make sure the top half of the bulb sits exposed above the soil line.

Pruning and Flowering

Snip off spent flower stalks right at the base to prevent the amigo from wasting energy on seed production! Let yellowing leaves dry back completely on their own so the bulb can reabsorb all their nutrients.

Albuca Spiralis SOS

Illness

Watch out for soft bulb rot caused by overwatering during rest periods! Keep an eye out for mealybugs hiding around the bulb neck, and make sure it gets plenty of sun so its leaves don't lose their curls.
