Alocasia Regal Shield

An outstanding hybrid created by crossing Alocasia reginula ('Black Velvet') and Alocasia odora, Alocasia 'Regal Shields' inherits the best traits of both parents. It combines the velvety texture and deep, dark coloration of 'Black Velvet' with the impressive vigor and upright growth habit of A. odora. The large, heart-shaped leaves emerge in a deep emerald to near-black tone, offset by bright lime-green primary veins and rich burgundy undersides. Evolutionarily suited for lush, humid microclimates, it grows with incredible speed during warm months, developing into a commanding tropical accent.

About Alocasia Regal Shield

Origin

A stunning horticultural hybrid cross between Alocasia odora and Alocasia reginula, bred specifically for dark foliage and robust growth.

Air Purifying

Yes! This giant leafy amigo works overtime, scrubbing common household toxins and VOCs from the air while boosting indoor oxygen levels.

Toxicity

Keep curious paws away! Like all Alocasias, it contains insoluble calcium oxalates, making it toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if chewed or swallowed.

Caring for Alocasia Regal Shield

Watering

Water when the top 25–30% of the soil has dried out. This amigo loves steady moisture like a wrung-out sponge, but hates sitting in soggy soil or drying out bone-dry. Serve filtered or rainwater to keep those leaf tips pristine!

Light and Placement

Bright, indirect light is its absolute happy spot! An east or west-facing window provides the perfect glow. Keep it out of harsh direct afternoon sun to protect those dark, velvety leaves from scorching.

Nutrition

Treat this fast-growing amigo to a snack every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Hold off during fall and winter when growth naturally slows.

Repotting

Level up its home every 1–2 years in spring when roots start filling the pot! Use a heavy, sturdy container with great drainage and a chunky aroid mix so its roots can support those massive, heavy leaves.

Pruning and Flowering

Trim off older, yellowing lower leaves right at the stem base using clean, sharp shears to direct energy into fresh upright shields. Indoor blooms are rare, but those dark, lime-veined leaves are the real showstopper anyway!

Alocasia Regal Shield SOS

Illness

Keep an eye out for spider mites, thrips, and root rot from overwatering. Low humidity can cause leaf margins to crisp up, so keep the air extra moist and cozy!
