Alocasia Yucatan Princess

A striking mutation derived from Alocasia sarawakensis, Alocasia 'Yucatan Princess' is celebrated for its towering architectural silhouette and rich, dramatic coloration. Emerging on stout, chocolate-maroon petioles, its massive, puckered leaves unfurl with a brilliant glossy finish in shades of deep olive, bronze, and dark plum-purple. Evolutionarily adapted to warm, humid tropical understories, its upright leaf carriage allows water to funnel down to its subterranean corm, driving incredibly rapid growth during warm months to form a commanding foliage display.

About Alocasia Yucatan Princess

Origin

Hails straight from the tropical understory of Borneo in Southeast Asia! As a selected hybrid of Alocasia sarawakensis, it carries true jungle DNA, thriving in warm, high-humidity environments shielded by towering tree canopies.

Air Purifying

Absolutely! It’s a hardworking green diva that helps scrub common household VOCs and air toxins like formaldehyde and benzene from your indoor air, all while pumping out plenty of clean, fresh oxygen.

Toxicity

Keep curious paws and little hands away! Like all Alocasias, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause immediate mouth and throat irritation if chewed, making it strictly toxic to cats, dogs, and humans.

Caring for Alocasia Yucatan Princess

Watering

Water when the top 25–30% of its soil has dried out. This amigo loves consistent moisture like a wrung-out sponge, but hates standing in soggy swamp water or drying out bone-dry. Serve filtered, distilled, or rainwater to keep those leaf tips pristine and avoid chemical burn!

Light and Placement

Bright, indirect light is its absolute happy zone! Set it near a bright east- or west-facing window where it can soak up gentle rays. Keep this amigo out of direct afternoon sun to protect those glossy, dark puckered leaves from scorching, and keep it away from chilly AC vents.

Nutrition

Give it a snack every 2–4 weeks during the active spring and summer growing season using a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength. When fall and winter arrive, hold off on the food—it’s taking a well-deserved seasonal nap!

Repotting

Level up its home every 1–2 years in spring when roots start crowding the pot or drying out soil too fast! Move up just 1–2 inches in pot size using a heavy, sturdy container with drainage holes and a super airy, chunky aroid mix rich in perlite and orchid bark.

Pruning and Flowering

Snip off any tired, yellowing, or drooping lower leaves right at the stem base using clean, sharp shears to direct energy back into fresh upright spears. It rarely blooms indoors, but let's be honest—its towering chocolate stems and metallic foliage are the main event anyway!

Alocasia Yucatan Princess SOS

Illness

Watch out for pesky uninvited guests like spider mites, thrips, and scale that love dry, warm foliage. Keep an eye on your watering schedule to prevent soggy root rot, and keep the air extra humid to avoid crispy, curling leaf edges!
