About Anthurium Andraeanum 'Red'

Origin

Native to the tropical rainforest canopy floors of Colombia and Ecuador, growing naturally as an epiphytic or hemiepiphytic plant in warm, high-humidity habitats.

Air Purifying

Proven in NASA clean air trials to filter air-borne toxins like ammonia, formaldehyde, toluene, and xylene while gently elevating indoor ambient humidity.

Toxicity

Contains sharp, insoluble calcium oxalate crystals throughout its foliage and stems. Ingestion leads to severe mouth pain, swelling, drooling, and digestive distress.

Caring for Anthurium Andraeanum 'Red'

Watering

Water thoroughly once the top 50% of the soil feels dry to the touch. Because its thick roots are epiphytic, it needs complete pot drainage and will suffer from root rot if left in soggy substrate.

Light and Placement

Needs medium-to-bright indirect light to maintain continuous blooming throughout the year. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight that scorches the glossy leaves, as well as low light which halts bloom production.

Nutrition

Feed every 3–4 weeks during active spring and summer growth using a balanced liquid fertilizer at half-strength. A fertilizer slightly higher in phosphorus will encourage maximum flower production.

Repotting

Repot every 1–2 years in spring using a chunky, highly aerated mix (such as orchid bark, perlite, peat or coco coir, and horticultural charcoal) to mimic its natural tree-anchored habitat.

Pruning and Flowering

Trim spent or fading blooms near the base of the stem so energy goes straight back into fresh foliage and new flowers. The iconic red "flower" is actually a waxy, heart-shaped leaf called a spathe.

Anthurium Andraeanum 'Red' SOS

Illness

Susceptible to spider mites, mealybugs, and thrips, especially in dry ambient air. Overwatering or heavy potting soil leads directly to root rot, while yellowing leaf tips indicate tap water mineral sensitivity.
