About Standard Bushing Begonia Rex

Origin

Derived from Begonia rex native to the humid, subtropical rainforest floor of Assam in northeastern India and surrounding East Asian regions. Naturally adapted to growing under shady, warm tree canopies, it thrives on constant leaf-litter moisture and humid air.

Air Purifying

Its broad, velvety leaves trap dust and gently transpire clean moisture into your indoor environment. While not a heavy chemical purifier, it creates a healthier, higher-humidity microclimate around your space.

Toxicity

Toxic to cats and dogs due to soluble calcium oxalates concentrated primarily in its underground rhizomes and leaf stems. Ingestion leads to oral burning, drooling, vomiting, and potential swallowing difficulty.

Caring for Standard Bushing Begonia Rex

Watering

Water thoroughly when the top 50% of the soil feels dry, targeting the soil line rather than the delicate leaves. Avoid overwatering or letting the pot sit in standing water, as its shallow rhizomes rot quickly in soggy soil.

Light and Placement

Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight which brings out its rich metallic, pink, and silver pigments. Direct, harsh sun will scorch and fade its vivid foliage, while low light turns leaves dull and sparse.

Nutrition

Feed every 2 to 3 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Cease fertilizing entirely through fall and winter while the plant rests.

Repotting

Repot every 1 to 2 years in spring using a wide, shallow pot that matches its surface-level rhizome growth habit. Use a light, airy potting mix containing peat moss or coco coir, perlite, and bark for rapid drainage.

Pruning and Flowering

Prune off old, faded, or damaged leaves at the rhizome base to keep the plant compact and encourage fresh foliage. It occasionally produces small, insignificant pink or white flowers that are often trimmed to preserve foliage energy.

Standard Bushing Begonia Rex SOS

Illness

Highly prone to powdery mildew and fungal leaf spots if leaves stay wet or air circulation is stagnant. Watch for mealybugs hiding along the rhizome crevices and spider mites on leaf undersides during dry periods.
