About Trailing and Vining Begonia Rex

Origin

Select hybrids combining Begonia rex foliage genetics with trailing, jointed-stem Begonia species native to humid tropical forest canopies. They naturally climb over mossy rocks and fall over tree limbs in Southeast Asian rainforest environments.

Air Puriyfing

Its long, cascading foliage cleans indoor air by trapping dust and constantly transpiring clean water vapor into your home. This makes it an excellent choice for naturally softening dry indoor air.

Toxicity

Toxic to dogs and cats due to soluble calcium oxalates found within its stems and root tissue. Keep this trailing variety hung high out of reach of pets to prevent mouth pain and stomach distress.

Caring for Trailing and Vining Begonia Rex

Watering

Allow the top 50% of the soil to dry out before watering thoroughly, letting excess moisture drain from the bottom. Avoid getting the trailing leaves excessively wet to protect against fungal infections.

Light and Placement

Thrives in bright, indirect light where its trailing stems can soak up energy without being hit by harsh direct sunlight. A high shelf or hanging hook near an east window offers the perfect lighting balance.

Nutrition

Feed every 2 to 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Cease feeding during the winter resting phase to protect its delicate root system.

Repotting

Repot every 1 to 2 years in spring using a light, well-aerated potting mix containing perlite and coco coir. Choose a hanging pot with plenty of bottom drainage holes to protect its fine root system.

Pruning and Flowering

Pinch back trailing stem tips regularly in spring to encourage branching and prevent a sparse, leggy appearance. It produces delicate white or pink flowers along the stem nodes during the warmer months.

Illness

Watch closely for powdery mildew on leaves and stems if humidity is high without good air circulation. Spider mites and mealybugs can occasionally infest the node joints where leaf stems meet vine branches.
