Origin

Native to the subtropical regions of South Africa, Eswatini, and Zimbabwe.

Caring for String of Hearts

Watering

Water when the soil has dried out 70–80% (or completely during winter). Because these amigos are semi-succulent, they store moisture in their heart-shaped leaves and tubers, so they prefer under-watering to overwatering. 

Light and Placement

These amigos thrive in bright, indirect light to keep their leaf patterns vibrant and avoid long gaps between leaves. They even appreciate a few hours of direct morning sun.

Nutrition

Apply a diluted, balanced liquid succulent fertilizer once a month during the spring and summer growing season. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.

Repotting

Repotting is rarely needed because of their shallow root system. Only repot every 2–3 years in spring when roots or tubers tightly fill the pot, using a gritty cactus/succulent mix.

Pruning and Flowering

Prune anytime to control length, encourage bushier top growth, or propagate new vines. In bright conditions, these amigos produce unique, lantern-shaped purplish flowers.

Illness

These amigos are primarily susceptible to root rot if left in soggy soil. Keep an eye out for mealybugs in the vine entanglements, but otherwise they are very resilient!
