About Chlorophytum Comosum 'Curly Sue'

Origin

Derived from Chlorophytum comosum native to the tropical and southern regions of Africa. It naturally grows along forest floors and rocky slopes under shaded forest canopies.

Air Purifying

Famous for its NASA-backed ability to filter indoor pollutants like formaldehyde, xylene, and carbon monoxide. It actively works to clean room air while adding gentle moisture to dry environments.

Toxicity

Completely non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a worry-free plant for any pet-friendly home. Note that cats are strangely attracted to it because it contains mild hallucinogenic compounds similar to catnip!

Caring for Chlorophytum Comosum 'Curly Sue'

Watering

Allow the top 50% of the soil to dry out between waterings, as its thick, fleshy tuberous roots store plenty of water. Water thoroughly, but ensure complete drainage to prevent soggy soil around the roots.

Light and Placement

Thrives in bright, indirect light which keeps its leaves tightly curled and maintains strong leaf striping. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun that burns leaf tips, as well as low light which causes curls to loosen.

Nutrition

Feed once a month during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Avoid over-fertilizing, which causes salt build-up and burns delicate leaf tips.

Repotting

Repot every 1 to 2 years in spring when its aggressive root system begins pushing the plant upward out of the pot. Choose a well-draining potting mix and a sturdy container with bottom drainage.

Pruning and Flowering

Trim off crispy, brown leaf tips using sharp shears, following the natural curve of the leaf. Produces long runners with small white flowers that quickly turn into miniature "spiderette" plantlets ready for propagation.

Chlorophytum Comosum 'Curly Sue' SOS

Illness

Highly resilient, though tip browning is common if exposed to fluoridated/chlorinated tap water or severe underwatering. Scale insects and mealybugs can occasionally nest near the center of the leaf whorls.
