Cycas Revoluta

Despite its common name, Cycas revoluta (commonly known as Sago Palm) is not a true palm at all, but an ancient cycad—a primitive group of seed plants that flourished alongside dinosaurs over 200 million years ago. Native to the warm subtropical islands of Southern Japan, this slow-growing living fossil produces a thick, woody trunk topped with a crown of stiff, glossy, deep green pinnate fronds. It stores water in its sturdy stem and thick foliage, allowing it to withstand periods of drought and bright coastal sun with minimal effort.

  • Toxic to pets and children
  • Repot once every 3 years
  • Fertilize once a month
  • Very little water
  • Bright, direct light

About Cycas Revoluta

Origin

Hails straight from the sunny, coastal islands of Southern Japan! Despite its palm-like appearance, this living fossil is actually an ancient cycad that has survived virtually unchanged for millions of years.

Air Purifying

Absolutely! This hardworking green diva helps filter common indoor toxins like benzene and formaldehyde from your space while keeping oxygen levels nicely topped up.

Toxicity

Extreme danger for curious pets! Every part of this plant is severely toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if chewed or ingested; keep this species completely out of reach of curious paws.

Caring for Cycas Revoluta

Watering

Water deeply only when the top 75% of the soil mix has dried out; the thick central trunk stores ample moisture, making the plant quick to rot if left in soggy or oversaturated soil.

Light and Placement

Bright, indirect light to direct sun is the absolute happy zone; place this plant right near a sun-drenched south- or west-facing window to keep those architectural fronds growing strong and vibrant.

Nutrition

Provide a snack once a month during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant or palm fertilizer diluted to half-strength; hold off completely during fall and winter.

REpotting

Level up its home only every 3–4 years in spring when roots completely fill the container; choose a heavy pot with drainage holes and use an ultra-airy, fast-draining potting or cactus soil mix.

Pruning and Flowering

Trim off lower, yellowing leaves right near the trunk base using clean, sharp shears; mature plants produce a striking cone in the center of the rosette, though indoors this is a rare spectacle!
