Caring for Rabbits Foot Fern

Watering

Water when the top 20–30% of the soil has dried out. Unlike other needy ferns, this amigo stores extra moisture in its fuzzy rhizomes, making it much more forgiving—just keep the soil lightly damp and never let it sit in soggy water!

Light and Placement

Bright, indirect light is their absolute favorite! Place them near an east-facing window or a few feet back from a bright south/west window. Avoid harsh direct sun, which will scorch their fine, lacey fronds.

Nutrition

Feed once a month during spring and summer using a liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Skip the snacks in fall and winter when growth naturally slows down.

Repotting

These slow growers love a snug home, so repotting is rarely needed! Only upgrade every 2–3 years in spring when roots crowd the pot. Be careful never to bury those cool, furry rhizomes in the soil—they prefer to crawl over the top!

Pruning and Flowering

As a fern, this amigo reproduces via spores and doesn't produce flowers. Pruning is simple—just snip off older, yellowed, or dried-out fronds near the base with clean shears to keep it looking tidy.

Illness

These resilient amigos are tough against most issues, but watch out for scale or mealybugs hiding under the fronds. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while super dry air might crisp up the leaf tips!
