Origin

Native to the warm, tropical regions of Southeast Asia, Taiwan, India, southern China, and northern Australia.

Caring for Ficus Microcarpa 'Ginseng'

Watering

Water when the soil has dried out 50–75%. Thanks to its thick, tuberous "ginseng" roots that store water, this tough little amigo prefers to dry out significantly between drinks—overwatering is the fastest way to make it drop leaves!

Light and Placement

Thrives in bright, indirect light! It loves a spot near a sunny window where it can soak up plenty of filtered sunshine. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch its shiny foliage, and keep it away from cold drafts.

Nutrition

Treat it once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant or bonsai fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Hold off on feeding completely during fall and winter.

Repotting

Repot every 2–3 years in spring using a well-draining citrus, bonsai, or general potting mix with added perlite or pumice. Make sure to keep those iconic, swollen trunk roots resting above the soil line!

Pruning and Flowering

Indoor blooms are super rare. Pruning is key for this amigo—trim back new growth in spring and summer to maintain that iconic bonsai tree shape. Always wear gloves to guard against the sticky white latex sap!
