About Fragaria Ananassa

Origin

First cultivated in Brittany, France in the 1750s as an accidental hybrid cross between Fragaria virginiana (from eastern North America) and Fragaria chiloensis (from Chile).

Caring for Fragaria Ananassa

Watering

Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Strawberries have shallow root systems and love consistent moisture—keep the soil like a wrung-out sponge, but never let them sit in soggy mud!

Light and Placement

A total sun worshiper! Thrives best in full sun, needing at least 6–8 hours of direct sunshine daily to produce sweet, juicy red berries and abundant white or pink flowers.

Nutrition

Treat them to a balanced, fruit-boosting or berry fertilizer once every 2–4 weeks during the active spring and summer growing season. Hold off on feeding during late autumn and winter dormancy. 

Repotting

Repot every 1–2 years in spring or early autumn, making sure the crown (where the leaves meet the roots) rests right at the soil level—never bury the crown! Use a rich, fast-draining potting mix in a pot with generous drainage.

Pruning and Flowering

Produces dainty white or pink blossoms in spring, followed by bright red berries! Trim off leafy runners (slender trailing stems) to focus the plant's energy on bigger fruit harvests, or let runners root to grow free baby plantlets!
