Native to the Philippines, Hoya Pubicalyx features long, narrow lance-shaped leaves heavily flecked with shimmering silver splashes. Tender new growth often emerges in rich shades of purple or bronze before maturing into deep glossy green. Extremely easygoing, this vigorous vine treats patient plant parents to dramatic clusters of fuzzy, deep maroon-to-pink star-shaped flowers!

Origin

Native to the warm, humid tropical rainforests of the Philippines, where it grows as a vigorous climbing and trailing epiphyte along forest trees.

Caring for Hoya Pubicalyx

Watering

Water when the soil has dried out 75–100% (almost completely dry). Its long, waxy leaves store plenty of moisture, making this resilient amigo very drought-tolerant—it strictly hates wet feet, so let it dry out thoroughly between drinks! 

Light and Placement

Thrives best in bright, indirect light with a few hours of gentle morning sunshine! High light keeps new growth emerging with deep purplish-maroon tones and promotes intense silver splash patterns across the foliage. 

Nutrition

Treat them once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant or orchid fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Skip the snacks completely during fall and winter.

Repotting

This climber loves a snug fit! It grows happily when slightly root-bound, so repot only every 2–3 years in spring. Use a chunky, highly breathable mix (packed with orchid bark, perlite, and peat) in a container just 1 inch larger with good drainage. 

Pruning and Flowering

Produces dramatic, star-shaped clusters of fuzzy, deep purple-red to pink blossoms with a sweet, spicy perfume! Golden rule: never cut off the flower spurs (peduncles) after blooming, as future flowers will re-bloom from those exact same spots year after year.

Illness

Root rot from soggy soil or poor drainage is its primary threat, so err on the side of under-watering! Keep an eye out for mealybugs hiding near leaf nodes or under long vines, and give its glossy leaves a wipe down with a damp cloth periodically to keep them free of dust.
