Lavandula Stoechas

Aromatic, whimsical, and distinctly Mediterranean, Lavandula stoechas—frequently sold as both French and Spanish Lavender—is a beloved perennial herb celebrated for its iconic flower head toppers. Native to sunny coastal regions, this compact evergreen shrub produces dense, narrow, silvery gray-green foliage that releases a rich, fresh lavender-pine scent when brushed. Atop sturdy stems, it produces pinecone-shaped purple flower heads crowned with delicate, petal-like bracts that resemble tiny rabbit ears or butterfly wings. Perfect for sunny windowsills, balconies, and bright rooms, it brings soothing fragrance, unique texture, and sunny coastal charm into your home.

About Lavandula Stoechas

Origin

Native to the Mediterranean basin, thriving along hot, sun-baked coastal scrublands, rocky hillsides, and dry soils. It adapts to intense heat and lean, fast-draining terrain.

Air Purifying

Aromatic foliage releases soothing essential oils like linalool that naturally refresh indoor and outdoor air currents. Its fragrant canopy also traps settling environmental dust.

Toxicity

Mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested in large quantities due to linalool and linalyl acetate content. Ingestion triggers digestive discomfort, drooling, and mild nausea in pets.

Caring for Lavandula Stoechas

Watering

Water deeply only when the top 75% to 100% of the soil has dried out completely. Highly drought-tolerant, it strictly despises soggy roots, heavy soil, and humid potting media.

Light and Placement

Demands full direct sun for at least 6 to 8 hours daily to maintain tight foliage and continuous blooms. Thrives best in sun-drenched outdoor locations, open balconies, or bright greenhouse bays.

Nutrition

Extremely light feeder that prefers lean substrate. Apply a low-dose balanced organic fertilizer just once in early spring to fuel new floral buds.

Repotting

Repot every 2 years in spring using a gritty, fast-draining cactus, succulent, or Mediterranean soil mix. Select a breathable terracotta pot with ample drainage holes.

Pruning and Flowering

Shear back by one-third after spring flowering finishes to maintain a tight mound and prevent bare, woody stems. Deadhead spent floral tufts to encourage a secondary bloom flush.

Lavandula Stoechas SOS

Illness

Highly susceptible to root rot and fungal dieback if grown in heavy, non-draining soil or stagnant, humid conditions. High airflow and sunlight are essential preventive measures.
