Staghorn Fern

Native to the tropical rainforests of Australia and Southeast Asia, the Staghorn Fern is an epiphytic marvel famous for its dramatic, antler-like foliage. While typically grown in pots using a loose, chunky bark mix, this versatile plant can also be mounted on wooden boards for a striking wall display. It grows two distinct frond types: flat, round shield fronds at its base that shield the roots, and long, arching fertile fronds that fork into signature stag antlers.

About Staghorn Fern

Origin

Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Australia, Southeast Asia, and Africa, where it grows as an epiphyte attached to tree trunks and branches rather than in soil. It features two distinct leaf types: flat, round shield fronds at the base that anchor the plant and absorb nutrients, and antler-like fronds that project outward and contain reproductive organs.

Air Purifying

Helps improve indoor air quality by absorbing airborne trace chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene.

Toxicity

Non-toxic and completely safe for homes with curious cats, dogs, and children.

Caring for Staghorn Fern

Watering

Soak the container thoroughly once the top 30% to 50% of the potting medium feels dry. Use a well-draining approach so water runs through freely, and always empty the drip tray so the bottom roots never sit in standing water.

Light and Placement

Thrives in medium to bright, indirect light. Gentle, diffused light keeps fronds vibrant, while direct afternoon sun will scorch the felt-like foliage and dark corners will cause growth to stall.

Nutrition

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to quarter-strength. Pause feeding entirely throughout the fall and winter months.

Repotting

Move up a pot size every 2 to 3 years in early spring only when the root system fills the pot. Use an extremely loose, breathable medium—a mix of coarse orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss—to mimic its natural epiphytic root environment.

Pruning and Flowering

Reproduces via spores and does not flower. Never peel off or cut away the brown, papery shield fronds at the base, as they protect the delicate root mass—only prune fully dead, yellowed antler fronds near the base using sterile shears.

Staghorn Fern SOS

Illness

Highly vulnerable to root rot if planted in heavy, dense soil or overwatered. Keep an eye out for scale insects or mealybugs hiding under the basal shield fronds, treating early with a gentle insecticidal soap or neem oil wipe.
