Sansevieria Fernwood

A hybrid of Sansevieria parva and Sansevieria suffruticosa (now botanically reclassified under the genus Dracaena), 'Fernwood' is a standout snake plant cultivar beloved for its fountain-like growth habit. Unlike strictly upright species, its slender, cylindrical leaves arch gracefully outward in dense rosettes. Showcasing striking dark green and light green tiger-striping along deeply grooved spears, it brings a sculptural, textured aesthetic to modern interiors, side tables, and office desks.

About Sansevieria Fernwood

Origin

A hybrid creation derived from Sansevieria suffruticosa and Sansevieria concinna, both native to the arid tropical regions of East Africa. It inherits a dense, fountain-like habit with slender, arching cylindrical leaves covered in distinctive dark green and silvery "tiger-stripe" patterning.

Air Purifying

Uses Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) to actively pull toxins like benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde from the air at night, releasing clean oxygen while you sleep.

Toxicity

Keep tucked safely away from curious dogs, cats, and young children. Contains natural chemical compounds called saponins that cause immediate mouth stinging, drooling, and digestive distress if chewed.

Caring for Sansevieria Fernwood

Watering

Treats water retention with extreme care! Let the pot dry down completely (75% to 100%) before offering a thorough soak. When in doubt, hold off an extra week—its fleshy foliage holds deep water reserves, but wet roots lead directly to base rot.

Light and Placement

Exceptionally versatile. Settles happily into dim, low-light office corners, but will push out fresh growth fastest under bright, filtered sunlight. Protect the leaves from intense, direct rays which can bleach its dark striping.

Nutrition

Low-maintenance to the core. Dose once in late spring and once in mid-summer using a standard houseplant food diluted to quarter-strength. Pause feeding completely through the fall and winter months.

Repotting

Prefers tight quarters. Shift into a slightly larger container every 2 to 3 years only when root rhizomes fill the pot completely. Always use a gritty, sharply draining cactus or succulent blend packed with perlite and pumice.

Pruning and Flowering

Spikes of tiny, fragrant greenish-white blooms can appear on mature plants in summer, though indoors they are rare. Trim off dry leaf tips or yellowed spears near the soil line using a clean, sharp knife to maintain its clean, structural look.

Sansevieria Fernwood SOS

Illness

Root rot caused by overwatering or dense, waterlogged soil is the primary threat. Periodically inspect the base of the spears for mealybugs or scale, wiping any pests away with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol.
