Sansevieria Zeylanica

Native to Sri Lanka, Sansevieria zeylanica (now botanically classified under Dracaena) is an architectural house plant celebrated for its refined, moody color palette. Growing in tall, erect clusters, its long sword-like leaves display rich olive-to-dark green tones broken up by delicate horizontal silver-grey banding. Lacking the bright yellow margins of 'Laurentii', it offers a sophisticated, minimalist aesthetic while retaining all the classic drought tolerance and low-light adaptability of the snake plant family.

  • Toxic to pets and children
  • Repot once every 3 years
  • No fertilizing necessary
  • Very little water
  • Bright, indirect light

About Sansevieria Zeylanica

Origin

Native to the dry, tropical regions of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). Known as the wild-type counterpart to variegated cultivars, it features upright, sword-shaped leaves devoid of yellow borders, displaying a rich dark green base wrapped in silvery-green horizontal wave patterns.

Air Purifying

Performs nocturnal CAM gas exchange to strip common household chemicals such as formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene from the air, making it an ideal plant for bedrooms.

Toxicity

Keep safely away from curious dogs, cats, and small children. Contains natural saponin compounds that cause mouth stinging, drooling, nausea, and digestive irritation if chewed or swallowed.

Caring for Sansevieria Zeylanica

Watering

Wait until the potting medium dries out completely (75% to 100%) before watering. Its thick foliage and underground rhizomes store water efficiently for weeks, whereas excess soil moisture will quickly cause root decay.

Light and Placement

Thrives across a wide range of light levels. It grows most actively in bright, indirect sunlight, but holds its structural shape and deep color exceptionally well in low-light rooms or shaded offices.

Nutrition

Low requirement. Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to quarter-strength once in late spring and once in mid-summer. Skip feeding entirely during fall and winter.

Repotting

Prefers tight, crowded roots. Upgrade to a container 1 to 2 inches wider every 3 years only when rhizomes begin filling the pot. Use a gritty, open cactus or succulent soil mix to ensure rapid drainage.

Pruning and Flowering

Mature plants may occasionally produce a central spike of fragrant, pale green flowers during summer under bright light. Use a clean, sharp knife to prune away damaged or aging outer leaves down at the soil line.

Sansevieria Zeylanica SOS

Illness

Highly vulnerable to root rot if overwatered or planted in dense, moisture-retentive soil. Inspect the base of the leaves occasionally for mealybugs or scale, wiping any pests away with isopropyl alcohol.
