Senecio Rowleyanus 'Variegata'

A sought-after cultivar derived from the Southwest African trailing species, Senecio rowleyanus f. variegata (botanically Curio rowleyanus f. variegata) is prized for its chimera foliage mutation. Unlike the solid green wild form, its spherical, water-storing beads are marbled with creamy white, pale yellow, and blush pink tones. Because variegated tissue lacks chlorophyll, this cultivar grows slightly slower and possesses less photosynthetic surface area, requiring optimized lighting conditions to maintain its pastel coloration and prevent the vines from reverting to solid green.

  • Toxic to pets and children
  • Repot once every 2 years
  • Fertilize once a month
  • Very little water
  • Bright, direct light

About Senecio Rowleyanus 'Variegata'

Origin

A highly sought-after variegated cultivar mutated from the wild South African Curio rowleyanus, previously known as Senecio rowleyanus, grown for its stunning creamy-white, pink, and mint-green spherical leaves!

Air Purifying

Absolutely! It’s a hardworking green diva that helps clear common indoor air toxins while releasing clean, fresh oxygen to keep your living space refreshed.

Toxicity

Keep curious paws away! Like its non-variegated sister, it contains toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids that cause stomach upset and drooling in cats, dogs, and humans if chewed or ingested.

Caring for Senecio Rowleyanus 'Variegata'

Watering

Water deeply only when the soil mix has dried out 100% and the pearls feel slightly soft to a gentle squeeze! Because variegated parts lack chlorophyll, it stores less energy and is even more sensitive to overwatering—never let it sit in damp soil!

Light and Placement

Bright, direct light is its absolute happy spot! The variegated tissue needs significantly more bright light than the standard version to prevent leaf loss and keep those gorgeous pink and white hues pop-pop-popping.

Nutrition

Give it a very light snack once a month during spring and summer using a balanced succulent and cactus fertilizer diluted to quarter-strength. Hold off completely during fall and winter when growth naturally slows down!

Repotting

Level up its home every 2–3 years in spring when its delicate root system fills the pot! Use a shallow planter or hanging basket with ample drainage holes and an extra-gritty, fast-draining cactus soil mix loaded with perlite and pumice.

Pruning and Flowering

Snip off leggy stems using clean, sharp shears to encourage bushier growth at the crown, or trim any non-variegated pure-green reverts so they don't overpower the variegated strands! Happy, bright-lit plants produce tiny, cinnamon-scented white flower heads in spring.

Senecio Rowleyanus 'Variegata' SOS

Illness

Watch out for root rot and turn-to-mush pearls caused by overwatering or soil that holds too much moisture! Keep a sharp eye out for mealybugs hiding between its variegated beads, and make sure top lighting is super strong so the crown stays dense.
