About Tradescantia Nanouk

Origin

Developed in the Netherlands in 2012 through selective breeding of Tradescantia albiflora species native to the neotropical regions of South America. Cultivated specifically for its plush, compact habit and extra-broad leaves painted in brilliant streaks of magenta, pale pink, white, and soft green with rich purple undersides.

Air Purifying

Plays a supportive role in indoor environments by absorbing trace volatile organic compounds from the air and adding oxygen as it grows.

Toxicity

Keep out of reach of pets and young children. Containing sap packed with irritating calcium oxalate crystals, contact or ingestion can cause mild skin redness, mouth itching, drooling, and digestive distress in cats and dogs.

Caring for Tradescantia Nanouk

Watering

Dip a finger into the top layer—give it a thorough soak once the top 50% to 75% of the soil mix feels dry. Be careful to direct water straight to the base rather than letting droplets pool on the velvety leaves, which can lead to unsightly brown spots.

Light and Placement

Needs generous, bright indirect light to preserve its candy-pink color. A spot near a bright window gives it the energy to stay bushy; in low light, the vibrant colors fade and the stems stretch out, becoming long and sparse.

Nutrition

Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Pause feeding entirely throughout the autumn and winter months when growth naturally slows down.

Repotting

Shift into a slightly wider pot every 12 to 18 months in early spring to give its shallow root system space to refresh. Use a light, free-draining mix of standard potting soil blended with plenty of perlite or pumice to prevent soggy roots.

Pruning and Flowering

Produces tiny, three-petaled white and pink blossoms at the stem tips under ideal conditions. To keep the plant thick and bushy, regularly pinch off long stem tips just above a leaf joint—and push those pruned cuttings directly back into the soil mix to root effortlessly!

Tradescantia Nanouk SOS

Illness

High susceptibility to root rot if overwatered or kept in dense, wet soil. Keep an eye out for common indoor pests like spider mites or fungus gnats, treating early with insecticidal soap or neem oil while ensuring proper airflow around the stems.
