About Tradescantia Purple Heart

Origin

Native to the gulf coast region of eastern Mexico (Tradescantia pallida). This trailing perennial is celebrated for its long, lance-shaped leaves that turn a striking, uniform deep violet-purple when grown in bright sun, accompanied by fleshy, jointed stems that cascade gracefully over pot edges.

Air Purifying

Efficiently removes airborne volatile organic compounds from indoor environments, absorbing trace household chemicals such as volatile organic pollutants to refresh indoor air quality.

Toxicity

Keep safely away from curious pets and young children. The stems and leaves secrete a sap containing microscopic crystal compounds that cause mild skin redness, oral itching, drooling, or digestive discomfort if chewed or handled roughly.

Caring for Tradescantia Purple Heart

Watering

Let the soil dry out substantially between drinks. Keep an eye on the foliage: when the top 50–75% of the pot is dry, give it a good drink before the leaves begin to lose their firmness.

Light and Placement

Craves bright direct sun or strong indirect light to maintain its intense violet color; dulls to washed-out green in shade.

Nutrition

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant food diluted to half-potency; pause completely in winter.

Repotting

Shift up a pot size every 12–18 months in early spring using an airy, free-draining blend of potting soil and perlite or pumice.

Pruning and Flowering

Produces bright pink, three-petaled blooms in summer. Pinch back vine tips regularly to force bushier growth and propagate cuttings directly in soil.

Tradescantia Purple Heart SOS
