A rugged, mountain-loving soul.

Alistair is a tough, low-growing mountaineer who is happiest out in the fresh, open air. Native to the rugged peaks of New Zealand, he doesn't care for the pampered indoor life or cozy, humid bathrooms. He sports a thick, tidy coat of tiny, blue-grey leaves that are often accented by a handsome, pencil-thin trim of red. Alistair thrives in the blinding sun and stands strong against harsh winds and rocky soils without a single complaint. Give him a bright, sunny spot in a rock garden or container with excellent drainage, and he will quietly grow into a neat, dense mound, blanketing himself in clusters of sweet white flowers every summer.

How to care for Alistair

Plant him in a location with full, direct sunlight to maintain his compact, dense habit and vibrant leaf coloring. Alistair requires exceptionally well-draining, gritty soil, as wet or waterlogged conditions will quickly lead to root rot. Water him moderately when the top few inches of soil dry out completely, but reduce your watering once he is established, as he is fairly drought-tolerant. He thrives outdoors in open, breezy spots with good air circulation and low-to-average humidity—avoid keeping him in humid indoor environments. Prune him back lightly after his summer flowering ends to help preserve his neat, mounded shape.
